Scratch Off latex

Scratch off latex, also known as rub removable or scratch off ink, is an opaque type of ink that obscures any underlying image or text until it’s scraped off. It’s commonly used for scratch cards, security codes, promotions, parking permits, and travel posters, among other things. It’s recommended to use stock weights ranging from 200gsm for posters to 400gsm for cards, and scratch off latex is typically available in gold or silver.

The process:

The scratch off latex ink is applied after a lottery release seal is put on the scratch off areas. Gloss or matt lamination can be added if desired. Both digital and lithographic printing methods are appropriate, and if print is necessary on top of the latex, the sheets can be fed back through the press. The application of scratch off latex ink is the final step in the process.

Potential pit falls

Poor adhesion of the scratch off ink or lamination and print set off.

Solutions:
Allow plenty of drying time. The print must be fully dry before the lottery release seal is applied and the lottery release seal must also have adequate drying time before the latex is applied.
The amount of drying time required will depend on many factors ranging from the weather to the ink saturation on the print so it’s important that the process isn’t rushed.
Choose the correct paper type – uncoated paper is unsuitable for scratch off latex inks due to its absorbency.

Solution:

To prevent show through, it’s important to use a paper weight that is sufficient for the job. Avoid using highly colored images under the scratch off latex unless a heavy weight stock is used. If show through is an issue, reducing the tint value in the area can help solve the problem.

The print on top of the scratch off latex is pale

Solution:

To avoid the issue of show-through, the recommended color to use beneath scratch off latex is 100% black. If colored images or text are necessary, then the scratch off latex must be changed to white.

Scratch off areas are too close to each other

Solution:

The shape and size of the scratch off areas can be customized as per your requirements, keeping in mind that the scratch off latex will overlap the designated area by approximately 2mm.
