How does variable data printing work?
For variable data printing, a fixed artwork design template and a distinct set of data, including text lines, images, and design elements, are required for each product to be printed. Digital printing software allows the static artwork and variable data to be printed together onto each item, eliminating the need for multiple versions of the artwork to be created manually. This automation is particularly helpful in creating packaging sleeves with personalised designs, as it streamlines the production process.
What do I need to set up a VDP print run?
Preparing your artwork for variable data printing is a straightforward process. At a minimum, you require a fixed artwork design file that includes all the elements of the design that will stay the same throughout each printed item, as well as a CSV file spreadsheet with a list of unique data that you wish to print. This setup makes it easy to print personalised packaging sleeves that feature unique design elements and data for each item, without the need for manual intervention.
What if I want to print unique images on each item?
Printing variable images is an effortless process. You can include the file name of each image within your database and then provide us with a folder file containing all the image files, your static artwork file, and your database file. This allows for the smooth and efficient printing of packaging sleeves with personalised images, as each image can be matched to the corresponding data in the database, with no need for manual adjustments.

How can I specify how VDP elements are arranged on my print design?
To include variable data elements in your packaging sleeves, you have two options. Firstly, you can leave a note with your order at the checkout. Alternatively, you can use design software such as InDesign, Photoshop, or Illustrator to add placeholder text or graphics on a separate layer from the rest of your design. We will then provide you with a digital proof of the design that displays the placement and appearance of the VDP elements in the final printed product. If any adjustments are required, please inform us, and we will make the necessary changes before printing.
